The battle in Peoria over whether — or how — to allow food trucks has two, well-delineated sides. Proponents celebrate the greater variety of food options they would bring to downtown diners, while the established restaurants argue that food trucks have an unfair advantage in not having to pay rent or property taxes.

Fortunately, there’s a sensible middle ground that should satisfy both sides:Allow the food trucks to operate, but require them to pay a market price for using the parking spots they occupy by auctioning them to the highest bidder.
